Humber Polytechnic Lab underwent renovations that concluded in September 2025, encompassing the following technology:
Operational Efficiency Optimization
At the Humber Lab, our Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) application exemplifies how automated processes can be optimized for maximum efficiency. By running the application overnight, we demonstrate the potential for 24/7 operations with zero human intervention. This capability underscores our commitment to fostering innovation and nurturing the next generation of innovators and disruptors.
Node-RED Application
Our Node-RED application simplifies factory operations by reducing the need for a large workforce. Instead of training multiple individuals to handle different parts of a factory, we can train a single person to maintain and update the software system to adapt to new applications. This approach encourages workers to acquire higher-value skills. The application features an intuitive and visually appealing user interface, allowing users to control and monitor the fleet’s status remotely.
Innovative Robotics
Delta Robot
The Delta robot, equipped with Movikit technology, accelerates the development of complex systems by using modular components instead of writing PLC code from scratch. This setup does not require coding expertise and can be modified for specific applications. Additionally, the Sick camera utilizes computer vision technology for precise load pickup and placement actions.
RA (Rack Assistant)
Our RA is designed for safety and reliability, capable of handling loads up to 600 kg. It uses Movitrans technology for inductive charging and features quasi-omnidirectional movement, reaching speeds of up to 1.6 m/s. The RA is equipped with super capacitors and employs lifelong mapping for accurate navigation.
MHA (Mobile Handling Assistant)
The MHA is a versatile and safe robotic system, compatible with various cobots and robotic arms, including the Kuka arm. It features contactless energy supply and is suitable for human-robot collaboration. For those apprehensive about using the MHA, a wireless touch-pendant is available for operation. The MHA is highly configurable for diverse applications and environments, with a simple contingency plan in case of emergencies. It includes an LED strip for easy diagnostics and uses Movitrans technology for continuous operation and maintenance. The vehicle interfaces with the cloud via MQTT/VDA 5050 and comes with an intuitive HMI for monitoring software, hardware, and connection status. The MHA employs QR code-based positioning technology and SLAM for localization, enabling it to navigate without physical track modifications.
Fleet Manager
Our Fleet Manager allows for real-time, remote access to information and adheres to the VDA 5050 standard. Both AGVs comply with VDA 5050 standards, ensuring compatibility with other fleet management systems. This flexibility enhances the overall efficiency and integration of our automated systems.
Hannover Messe Remote Application
Showcasing the Power of Remote Collaboration and Robotics at the Innovation Lab
The remote application at the Innovation Lab highlights the seamless collaboration between teams across continents and showcases the precision of our robots in executing commands. This innovative approach emphasizes the capabilities of modern technology in facilitating effective communication and operational efficiency, regardless of geographical barriers.
At the push of a button in Germany, physical processes in Canada, such as waving one of three flags, are executed. Furthermore, a twin action occurs back in Germany, perfectly replicating the movement. This full, real-time reproduction of movements can be replicated either in a simulation or in a vehicle on the other side of the world, with a seamless bi-directional flow between the real world and a simulated environment.
Key Benefits:
In conjunction with the flexibility of mobile robotics, as opposed to traditional conveyors, physical reorganization becomes a breeze. The manufacturing of niche or constantly changing processes is now possible, with changeovers measured in days rather than years.
This article showcases the advanced technology and innovative solutions developed at the Innovation Lab, demonstrating our commitment to operational efficiency and cutting-edge robotics.
